One of the rules of happy living is identifying what keeps you busy and happy. Many people who started with early success stories got easily distracted by the immediate applause they got; some never consolidated on those gains and as such fell off; and those who started off rough with apparent initial failures were not able to persevere petty gossips and criticisms and so could not navigate through even when the green lights were beginning to show. At both points keeping focus and not losing grip of the compass is very crucial. Early successes and initial setbacks need strong focus if one does not want to lose balance.  

Keeping focus needs perseverance. It needs consistency. It needs conviction. Perseverance will help you not to get distracted by outer (external) contrary forces. Consistency will help you to battle against internal (inner) conflicts of the mind. Conviction will reinforce that you are moving in the right direction.  Perseverance is a virtue of the heart. Consistency is a virtue of the mind. Conviction is a virtue of the intellect. When the heart, mind, intellect and will are in unison focus is achieved. Focus is a basic motivation for a happy living.

Examples: A story is told of a young man who was so talented and intelligent. In his early days in the university, he won a talent show worth millions of monies, engulfed by such an immediate early success he dropped out of school and started living a flamboyant celebrity kind of life. He lost focused and only realized himself when the money got finished like the proverbial prodigal son in Luke´s Gospel. It took him years to get himself out of bankruptcy and never really got back to his feet in the end. He was a victim of lack of focus occasioned by the distraction of an early success story.

Lessons: In your journey of life do not get distracted by minor successes because those early successes are a glimpse of what lies ahead. Keep your calm, stay focus, and keep working ahead with eyes kept on the bigger ones. Greed, immaturity, and lack of focus can make us settle for crumps while we are worth millions more.
